Traffic delays should be expected on Route 1 around Conowingo Dam on Thursday, May 31, the dam's operator says.
Personnel from the Conowingo Hydroelectric Generating Station are due to move crest gates from the dam to the upper parking lot at the Conowingo Visitor Center, on the Harford County side of the dam, for regular maintenance and repairs, according to a news release from Exelon Generation which owns the dam.
To move these large crest gates, it will be necessary to temporarily delay traffic on U.S. Route 1 in both directions from Route 222 in Cecil County to Shures Landing Road on the Harford County side. The temporary delays are expected to occur any time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on and delays on the highway will last from 15 to 20 minutes at a time, Exelon Generation said.
The work that will be performed is routine maintenance and will have no impact on operations at the generating station. All necessary permits have been received by the Maryland State Highway and the transport will be escorted by the Maryland State Police. As the project progresses, additional road closures may be necessary, and Exelon will make public notification of the closures, the company said.
In 2012, it is expected that up to six crest gates will be moved for maintenance and that all 50 crest gates are scheduled to have maintenance work done during the next couple of years as part of this project.
