There were short delays for drivers using Route1 over Conowingo Dam this week, and more are expected in the coming year, as part of a lengthy process to repair the dam's crest gates.
The delays on Route 1 over the dam are caused when workers move crest gates from the dam to a nearby staging area for repairs and refurbishing, according to Exelon Power, the dam's owner.
There were delays on Route 1 in both directions Tuesday and Wednesday from Route 222 on the Cecil County side of the dam to Shures Landing Road on the Harford County side.
Last month, workers removed two crest gates from the dam and transported them to the parking lot by the visitors center and pool to perform maintenance work, according to Exelon Manager of Communications Bob Judge. That work was completed and the gates were brought back to the dam this week.
These two gates are part of a larger project to perform maintenance work on 50 of the dam's crest gates, all of which have to be moved, Judge said Tuesday. This year they expect to do six to eight gates and repair them in pairs, he added.
The work is described as routine maintenance and will not impact the generating station on the Harford County side of the dam, Exelon said in a news release.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
