An Aberdeen woman was ordered held without bail Thursday after being charged with child abuse in which one of her children was left with multiple skull fractures, a prosecutor said.

Kayla Marie Barker, 23, who has addresses in the 400 block of Holly Drive and the first block of Spesutia Road in court records, is charged with first-degree child abuse and first-degree assault.

Barker, who was initially held on $1.5 million bail following her arrest Wednesday, appeared before District Court Judge Susan Hazlett in Bel Air for a bail review hearing Thursday afternoon.

Timothy Bahr, Barker's public defender, asked for the bail to be reduced, saying Barker would not be able to make such a high bail.

Bahr said Barker is single and has two children, a 3-year-old and an 8-month-old, and has lived her entire life in Harford County.

Assistant State's Attorney Trenna Manners referred to the charging documents when she said the child abuse allegations involve Barker's children, including multiple skull fractures to the 8-month-old.

Manners called the charges "serious" and said Barker poses a "significant danger" to her children. She requested that Barker be held without bail.

Hazlett agreed and ordered that Baker remain jailed at the Harford County Detention Center.

A spokesperson for the Harford County Sheriff's Office said the investigation of Baker is being handled by the Harford County Child Advocacy Center.
