Port Deposit: Gearing up for Relay for Life with bingo Saturday

The Relay for Life Team of "Bethany's Angels" will sponsor a Basket Bingo Saturday at the VFW Post 8185, 520 Susquehanna River Road. This bingo is the first of three fundraisers the team has scheduled for 2013. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the games will begin at 7 p.m. All prizes will be Longaberger items and the cost to play will be $12 per person. Extra cards, raffles and refreshments will be available for separate purchase. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Kick-off for this year's Relay for Life Event in Elkton will be Saturday at the Moose Lodge on Route 213 in Fair Hill at 6 p.m. All committee members, team captains, team members and interested parties are invited to attend. Teams will walk at Elkton High School starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 31 through 6 a.m. on June 1.

The Route One Band played to a sold-out crowd for their final performance on New Year's Eve at the VFW Post 8185.

Last Friday, a memorial service was held for Port's Meyer Jensen, who passed away in October; and life-long local, Thelma Frederick, was laid to rest on Saturday at Asbury Methodist Church.

Speedy recovery to Edgar Tennis, Jackson Park Road, as he had a recent hospital stay at Harford Memorial.

Happy birthday to Dale Brown Sr., Reservoir Road, as he celebrated his birthday Jan. 7.

Twins Isabella and Natalie Vanderhoef of Nottingham enjoyed blowing out 10 birthday candles Jan. 8.

Sharon Fox Gagner, Camp Meeting Ground Road, blew out a considerably higher number of candles Jan. 10; Ben Clark, son of Kevin and Rebecca Clark, Principio Furnace, celebrated his 5th birthday the same day.

Brenda Conjour, Longaberger consultant, has scheduled a Basket Bingo for today (Friday) at the Bernard L. Tobin American Legion Post 128, 44 N. Parke St., in Aberdeen. The cost is $12 per person and the proceeds will benefit the Aberdeen High School girls basketball team. Maggie Jackson, Jackson Park Road, enjoyed a holiday trip to Nashville, Tenn., to visit her three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren for Christmas. Maggie stayed with granddaughter, Kay Bryant Crouch and family, returning to Port in time for New Year's.

Boy Scout Troop 28 will sponsor a Basket Bingo Sunday at the American Legion Post 194, 336 E. Main St., Rising Sun. The doors will open at 0 p.m., early birds will be played at 2:50 p.m. and the regular games will begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person. Proceeds will benefit Boy Scout Troop 28. The Joseph S. Murphy VFW Post 7130, Delta, Pa., will resume Tuesday night bingo games on Tuesday, Jan. 15 after a holiday break.

The monthly meeting of the Port Deposit Heritage Corporation was canceled for January. The board of directors will next meet on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Paw Building.
