Garrett Michael Anthony, son of Hayden and Linda Anthony, of Bel Air, was formally awarded his Eagle Scout rank and medal in an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Jan. 8 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Abingdon. Garrett, a member of Troop 313 in Bel Air and a senior at C. Milton Wright High School, became an official Eagle Scout on June 2, 2011, and continues to be active in scouting, most recently earning the Bronze Eagle Palm.
Garrett earned Cub Scouting's highest award, the Arrow of Light, as a fifth grader in 2005 and crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 313 that same year. He has earned 50 merit badges, and served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Den Chief, and Recruitment Ambassador for his troop. He has participated in many scouting events, camps, service projects, and the Eagle Scout Projects of 12 fellow scouts, including his older brother Matt.
As part of the final requirements for becoming an Eagle, Garrett led a major service project at the Humane Society of Harford County that involved 271 personnel hours from the planning stages and fund raising to completion. In order to make much needed improvements to the Dog Agility Yard, Garrett organized work crews to address each of four tasks. A drainage problem was corrected by digging a 55 foot drainage trench, installing a drain box and drainage pipe to direct water outside the Agility Yard. In addition, volunteers built a 6-by-8-foot patio and a large wooden toy box, and added 16-gauge wire to the fence separating the large and small dogs. The on-site work was completed in October 2010 by a team of 25 scouts, friends, shelter volunteers and family members.
Garrett is an honor student, a member of the C. Milton Wright High School Band, Academic Team, and the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. He serves as an Acolyte at St. Mary's and is active in the youth group and choir. During the school year, he works as a television show crew member at Harford Cable Network for the Homework 411 program and, in the summer, he is a concession vendor at Ripken Stadium. Garrett plans to major in Computer Science at college and is considering a military career.
