Jane Sawyers at the Port Deposit VFW Post 8185 organizes a canteen party on the last Saturday of each month at the post home for VFW members. Each month, Jane conducts a fundraiser at the party to benefit a different charity. January's fundraiser benefited the Department of Maryland Ladies Auxiliary President's Special Project and February's recipient was the VFW's National Home for Children. Last week, I incorrectly identified Jane; but…by any name…she is very much appreciated at VFW Post 8185.
Anne Gibson and her co-captain of Relay for Life Team "Bethany's Angels" attended Relay University in Newark, Del., on Feb. 27. Anne joined other teams who will walk at Elkton High School on May 31 along with teams from North East, Middletown, Wilmington and the University of Delaware. The team captains learned new ways to "tell the story" of victims and survivors, and they were encouraged to "grow their teams." New fundraising ideas were shared with all. Anne shared her notes with her team at February's dinner meeting Feb. 28 at The Bayou in Havre de Grace.
Much sympathy is extended to the family and friends of F. Ellis Benjamin who passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 22 while visiting his sister, Joan, and her family in Massachusetts. And condolences are extended to the family and friends of Sam "Mike" Mitchem of Rising Sun, who died Feb. 28 after a long illness.
