The American Legion Riders, Slate Ridge Post 182, in conjunction with fallen Marine Sgt. Michael Heede's family and friends, have undertaken the task of maintaining and planting a flower bed around the memorial sign honoring the fallen Marine at the intersection of Routes 136 and 165.
Assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sgt. Heede was killed in action July 13, 2009 in combat operations in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Heede was a 2005 graduate of Kennard Dale High School and former Delta, Pa., resident who wanted to be a Marine so badly he signed up when he was 16, two years before they could take him.
Sgt. Heede was a combat engineer on his third tour of duty overseas when he was killed by an improvised explosive device. He was a veteran of the Iraq war and volunteered for deployment to Afghanistan because two of his buddies were going. During his military career, he won the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal and a Navy Unit Commendation Medal among other honors.
The American Legion Riders would like to thank Delta Lumber, The Mill of Whiteford and Kefauver's Lumber for their generous donations toward the flower bed and memorial.
The American Legion Riders will also be participating in the 3rd Annual Sgt. Michael Heede Jr. Memorial Poker Run, which benefits the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, on Saturday, July 14 (rain date, Saturday, July 21).
