The former Carriage House to the Tome Mansion was the scene of fascinating story-telling and scrumptious refreshments April 25 as the Port Deposit Heritage Corporation held its 38th annual General Meeting. After an abbreviated business meeting and election of officers for 2013, those assembled listened to a performance by an actor playing Dr. Williams Beanes as he spun a nail-biting account of his imprisonment by the British during the War of 1812, including his association with Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry. Key penned the Star Spangled Banner, inspired by the battle as he witnessed it from the deck of a British ship. Former Paw Paw Museum curator Erika Quesenbery Sturgill introduced Dr. Beanes and then told the group about the British burning of Havre de Grace and the sparing of Port Deposit.
