Port raises money to help wounded veteran [Community]

Auction ServiceRelay for Life

Two special fundraisers took place at the Port Deposit VFW Post 8185 last weekend. In the big hall was a "celebration of love and support" for the Kessler Family, featuring several bands, a silent auction, raffles, food and door prizes.

The proceeds of that 12-hour fundraising marathon will benefit local wounded veteran, Jeffrey Kessler. Jeffrey will soon move into the home provided for him by Homes for Our Troops, but donations of materials plus private and corporate monetary funding is still necessary to make his home a reality. Thanks, Joyce Gilley!

That same evening, almost $1,000 was raised in the post canteen for the VFW's National Home for Children via a silent auction organized by Jane Peterson. Thanks, Jane!

Belated birthday greetings go to Juanita Shaffer, of Churchville, as she celebrated on Feb. 17. And Juanita's husband, Olan Shaffer, added a year to his age on Feb. 28.

Our grandson, Michael Conner Bierly, blew out three candles on his birthday cake at his home in Columbia on Feb. 22 along with his family, extended family, and little friends.

Donnie White, his daughter-in-law Ashley, and his friend Gwen Thompson, all celebrated birthdays with two homemade cakes at the VFW last Saturday night. Donnie's actual birthday was Feb. 22 and Gwen's actual birthday was Feb. 26. Best to all!

Much sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Connie Poist Oppler, formerly of Port, as she passed away Feb. 21. Although Connie grew up in Port Deposit with her siblings Benny, Joyce, Janet, Catherine and Perry, she raised her family in Potomac. Her funeral services were at Patterson's Funeral Home on Feb. 26.

Jeannie Crabbe Weitzel, Conowingo, and her cousin, Amy Eaton, both enjoyed birthday wishes on Feb. 23. Our daughter-in-law's mom, Carolyn Green of Grasonville, celebrated her big day on the 23rd as well.
