Libby Richardson, Chairman of The Cody G. Richardson Memorial Scholarship Foundation, gives the following report:

The second annual Cody G. Richardson Relentless Run 5K and Fun Walk to benefit the Cody G. Richardson Memorial Scholarship Fund was held on 1 June in Perryville. The event brought together nearly 600 participants and volunteers to honor Cody and assist in making the dream of a college education and athletics a possibility for Harford and Cecil gounty graduating high school seniors.

The Relentless Run 5K is in honor of Cody, an accomplished athlete and 2011 graduate of Perryville High School who lost his life in July 2011 at the age of 18 in a tragic car accident. Cody was a spirited and loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to many. Born early with troubling complications and near misses, Cody prevailed through a series of tremendous physical hardships to grow into an exceptional young man, a gifted athlete and Maryland State Champion hurdler.

From a young age, Cody realized the life he dreamed of would take hard work. To him, the world was full of possibilities and opportunities. He learned to believe in himself and he looked at this world through a lens of hope, aspiration and willingness. He worked hard in school, in the gym and in the field developing as an athlete and also spiritually while attending church. He formed lasting friendships with people of all ages and backgrounds and left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

Maintaining this memorial event is a fitting tribute to Cody and allows his legacy to continue. The foundation's hope is for high school seniors to benefit from their efforts, for those who knew him to keep him close, and for those who didn't know him to learn more about this outstanding young man. This CGR Memorial Run/Walk is designed to engage folks of any age or ability by offering a day filled with fun to create lasting memories and give back to the community by way of scholarship benefits.

As a scholarship benefit, these funds raised were awarded to students who best represented Cody's Relentless "DID-IT" spirit of devotion, innocence, duty, integrity and tenacity. Through the run/walk event, tireless fundraising efforts and sponsorship of many Cecil and Harford county businesses and community members, the fund was able to provide 11 Harford and Cecil county students with $1,500 or $1,000 scholarships for the fall 2013 college semester. Student enrichment and the betterment of the community is the CGR Memorial's focus. Health through fitness and fellowship is what Cody was about and what the representative CGR Relentless events are all about.

The recipients for 2013 were as follows:

• $1,500 scholarship winners, Eric Barton of Perryville High School and Nicholas Adams of Bel Air High School.

• $1,000 scholarship winners Leo Bitner III of Perryville High School; Michael Capozzoli of C. Milton Wright High School; Kaylee Haberkam of Perryville High School; Amy Kling of Havre de Grace High School; Jimmia McCluskey of Aberdeen High School; Domenique Palogruto of Elkton High School; Robert Smith of Havre de Grace High School; Brooke Thompson of the Tome School and Allison Watson of Perryville High School.

The Cody G. Richardson Memorial Scholarship Foundation is dedicated to continuing this memorial fund for years to come to carry on the legacy of Cody's giving spirit and for the relentless pursuit of bright futures for high school seniors.
