Harford County's largest local financial institution has partnered with Harford Community College to secure naming rights for the college's new Susquehanna Center arena, which is expected to open later this year.

In a special announcement Monday, HCC said APG Federal Credit Union secured the naming rights for the arena, which will be called the APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College.

When the construction on the arena is completed later this year, it will be able to accommodate 3,200 people, which the college says will make the building the largest indoor venue in northeastern Maryland.

APGFCU will contribute a little more than $50,000 per year to the college over 15 years, college officials said. This annual gift will fund scholarships, operations and programming at the arena, college officials said.

In return, the credit union will have its name and logo on signs inside and outside of the building, on the arena floor, the pillars and scoreboard, plus arena advertising, posters, basketball and volleyball schedules, programs and playbills.

"APGFCU is a longtime supporter of Harford Community College, particularly of student scholarships and the Small Business Development Center," an HCC news release states. "APGFCU is also a statewide leader in financial literacy education, reaching out to 10,151 youth in 2011 alone."

The arena will house three HCC athletic teams: men's and women's basketball, as well as women's volleyball. It will also host community and regional events, commencement ceremonies, concerts, fundraisers, conferences, trade shows and other special events.

The Susquehanna Center expansion project is costing $26,700,000 and is slated to be completed by the end of August or the beginning of September.

"The new Susquehanna Center will provide an unmatched gathering place right in the heart of our community and will offer sporting, cultural and civic activities for all ages," the credit union's CEO and president, Don W. Lewis, said in the same news release.

Lewis and HCC President Dennis Golladay jointly announced the arrangement.

The college will have a grand opening for the APG Federal Credit Union Arena sometime during the 2012-2013 school year.

In addition to the arena naming rights, HCC is launching a seat-naming opportunity: $100 per seat in the arena, with 1,200 seats available.
