The top-seeded Westminster High School Owls rode the arm and legs of quarterback Deryk Kern to a resounding 62-28 win over second seed Sherwood High in the Class 4A North Region championship game at Ruby Field.
Yet after defeating Reginald Lewis in the first playoff game in school history last Saturday, Manchester Valley closed its season with a 47-14 loss in the Class 1A North Region final at Woodlawn High School.
Kern passes, runs for nine touchdowns
The runaway win over perennial power Sherwood (9-3) kept Westminster unbeaten at 12-0, and propelled coach Brad Wilson’s team into the state semifinals for the first time since 2005.
Kern threw for six touchdowns and ran for three more scores. The Owls’ senior quarterback now holds the state single-season record of 61 touchdown passes, breaking the old mark of 56 set by Arundel’s Billy Cosh in 2008.
Kern also set a new county single-season record for passing yardage on Friday night, eclipsing the record set by Westminster quarterback Kevin Clancy seven years ago.
Westminster, which has won 20 of 22 games since the start of the 2011 season, will host either Quince Orchard (11-1) or Meade (10-2) next Friday night at Ruby Field.
If the Owls win, they will play in the Class 4A state championship game on Nov. 30 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
On Friday, Quince Orchard raced to a 41-7 victory over Northwest, while Meade scored its second upset in a row with a 28-21 win at defending Class 4A state champion Old Mill.
The state semifinal pairings will be finalized on Saturday, following the Class 4A South Region title game between top seed Henry Wise and third-seeded Suitland.
Mavericks end first-ever playoff run
In just its fourth season, Manchester Valley made its first playoff appearance. A thrilling first-round win over Baltimore City Division II champion Reginald Lewis gave the Mavericks significant momentum, but Manchester Valley could not sustain the effort against New Town, and fell by the 47-14 tally.
The Titans, now 10-2, will play for a berth in the Class 1A title game next Friday at defending state champion Dunbar.
