Former Francis Scott Key and McDaniel College student and tennis player Steve French has been named McDaniel's interim head men's and women's tennis coach.
A 2012 graduate of McDaniel, French has spent the fall as an assistant on the Green Terror staff and takes over as the interim head coach after Brian Kastner announced his resignation to take a head coaching job at Hollins University.
"We wanted to keep continuity within the program during this transition," said Director of Athletics Paul Moyer. "Steve has been associated with the program as a player and coach, and (is) someone who can lead the tennis program through the transition."
French has spent the last three and a half years working at West Winds Tennis and Fitness Center in New Market. He has also served as one of the head counselors at West Winds Summer Sports Camp; and assists with the Quikstart tennis junior program.
A New Windsor native, French graduated in May with a degree in exercise science and is currently working toward his masters in physical education at McDaniel.
In three seasons as a player, French accumulated 13 wins in singles play, and spent time playing No. 1 in the Centennial Conference. He also had 11 doubles wins during his time on the court, and was captain of the squad as a senior.
French started his collegiate career at Frostburg, earning second-team all-conference honors in doubles play, where he was second at the conference tournament.
As a senior at Francis Scott Key High School, French was 16-0 in doubles play, winning the county championship.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
