As Manchester Valley closed out the team's 26-7 win over rival North Carroll on Friday night, the PA announcer thanked fans for their support during the season and congratulated the Mavericks on posting a winning record this year.
But that winning season isn't over.
The Mavericks’ win over North Carroll in the annual "Battle of the Bypass" game, combined with Northwestern-Baltimore High School’s loss to Reginald Lewis High School earlier on Friday, clinched the first-ever playoff spot for the four-year-old Maverick football program.
Manchester Valley and Northwestern-Baltimore ended the regular season with identical 7-3 records, and a third school, the Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, in Baltimore County, was also in the mix.
But by virtue of points awarded for various wins over higher competition, the Mavericks come out on top — by just two points — for the final playoff spot in Class 1A North region.
Coach Tony Shermeyer’s Mavericks will travel to either New Town in Owings Mills or Baltimore’s Reginald Lewis next Saturday for a Class 1A North regional semifinal.
The Mavericks will join Westminster High and South Carroll High as the trio of teams from Carroll County to make the postseason.
