Century adds championship in Carroll's all-star week of lacrosse

The Century girls' lacrosse team added to its trophy case again on Tuesday, earning its sixth state championship with a 12-9 victory over Queen Anne's in the Class 3A/2A title game at UMBC Stadium.

Century used a familiar formula to win its sixth state title. Haley Bordner, Alice Mercer, and Angela Flister provided the bulk of the scoring in the Knights' 12-9 Class 3A/2A championship win over Queen Anne's, which was playing in its first title game.

Bordner scored five goals and added an assist for the Knights, who tallied five unanswered goals in the final 5:09 of the first half to turn a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 halftime lead.

Mercer and Flister combined for five scores for Century, which has been to the state championship game nine times in the school's ten-year history.

Century finished with a 17-1 record, its only loss coming to national power McDonogh in late April. Queen Anne's, which was led by Mollie Stevens' four goals, closed at 16-2-1.

The championship victory capped a phenomenal year for Bordner. A key member of the Century volleyball team that won its first state crown in the fall, Bordner also was a starter for a Knight girls' basketball squad that reached the Class 2A state title game.

Bordner scored three times in the first half, including a free-position goal that gave the Knights their 8-5 halftime edge. She also scored a pair of unassisted goals in the second half, as the Knights gradually pulled away from a Lion team that had upset Mount Hebron in Friday's state semifinal.

"It's been an amazing season and year for me," said the junior attacker, who is headed to the University of Florida after next year. "There was a lot of excitement, and the only thing that makes me sad is that I won't ever play with Alice again."

The Lions took their largest lead of the game when Stevens scored an unassisted goal to make it 5-3 with 8:05 left in the opening half.

But Century started a game-deciding 9-2 run on Flister's first goal with 5:09 remaining. Century took its first lead at 6-5 when Flister scored again at the 2:51 mark, and the Knights were on their way.

"Ever since we lost last year in the state finals (to Marriotts Ridge), these three have been on a mission," said Century head coach Becky Groves, who also guided the Knights to the Class 2A volleyball state championship last fall. "They were very hurt by losing, and no matter what it took they were going to get that state title."

With just three seniors on the roster, the Knights could be headed for several more championships.

Century, which edged C. Milton Wright 10-8 in the state semifinals, will certainly miss two four-year varsity players who were integral parts of three state title teams: Mercer, who will play at Maryland, and the Florida-bound Flister.

But Bordner will join forces with sophomore Sky Hyatt and junior Kailey Wolfe (one goal and one assist each vs. Queen Anne's) to give the Knights another shot at a state championship next spring.

"Coming in as freshmen, we knew they had already won states," Mercer said. "We had a lot of success that year, and found our place.

"Each year, after the seniors graduated, Angela and I felt like we had to step up even more because Becky and (former coach) Rose Pentz had expected that of us."
