WESTMINSTER — The Westminster Police Department reported this week that it has seen a "significant increase" in recent weeks in the number of cases involving theft from vehicles, and is seeking the public help in terms of information and prevention.

Police said that since May 20, 21 separate cases of theft or tampering have been reported. Police say the thefts occur during the hours of darkness and, in almost every case, the car was unlocked when the theft occurred.

Thefts have been reported in all areas of the city, police said. Articles stolen include a laptop computer, cameras, GPS units, jewelry and even loose change.

A $250 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Anyone with information may contact the Westminster Police Department at 410-848-4646.

Additionally, police are asking residents to remember prevention tips:

• Always lock your car when it is unoccupied.

• Never leave articles of value inside your vehicle. Lock them in the trunk if you can't take them with you.

• Park vehicles in well lit areas.

• Record the serial numbers of all valuables carried in your vehicle.

• Contact police immediately if you see anything suspicious.
