Former students at Oklahoma Road Middle School in Eldersburg were honored this week as the creators of a winning video in the Maryland Emergency Management Agency's Public Service Announcement Contest.

Students were asked to develop short (30-60 second) public service announcements that focused on personal preparedness.

The winning video, created by students Ryan Compton and Tyler Spaid, depicts a teen who hears a smoke alarms in his home, and discovers a fire downstairs — and doesn't know how to react. The video says, "There are families with plans, and families without plans. Which family will you be?"

Compton and Spaid are now ninth graders at Liberty High School, but were ORMS students at the time, and won the award in the middle school competition.

Winning schools receive a gift card from Target that they may use to purchase supplies, and all of the students involved in the project received certificates.

The videos will be available for showing on cable television channels run by local school systems and county/municipal governments — and are also available on YouTube by typing MEMACitizenCorps into the search engine.
