Major traffic congestion is expected around the Gilman School campus Friday afternoon, even before the normal rush-hour crush.
The intersection of Northern Parkway and Roland Avenue will be the area most affected when fans attending soccer match between Gilman and archrival McDonogh begins at 2:15 p.m.
Just 15 minutes later, the Calvert Hall-Gilman football game will kickoff at field very close to the soccer pitch.
"Go early," is the advice Calvert Hall athletic director Lou Eckerl said he is giving to Cardinal fans who plan on seeing the showdown.
Gilman has "less than 200 parking spots" in its lot that is accessed via Northern Parkway.
Once that lot is full, it will be closed by security officers, according to Jeff McGhee, the director of security at Gilman. He added that security officers will direct traffic after the events.
"Things are going to be very tight," McGhee said, noting that carpool on the Roland Park entrance will be at the same time the games will be played.
He said that 12 extra security officers have been hired for the afternoon.
Fans will not be allowed to park at Bryn Mawr School, which is on the north side of Northern Parkway.
An e-mail to Bryn Mawr parents states that Gilman will not provide additional parking for those attending the games and that fans will probably look for parking in and around the surrounding neighborhoods.
It went on to say that Bryn Mawr will be monitoring its driveways and carpool lanes throughout the afternoon and is anticipating major traffic congestion and parking issues throughout Chatham, the Orchards, Kemper Green, Northern Parkway and Northern Roland Park areas.
Bryn Mawr security plans to monitor school entrances at beginning at noon and to expect great difficulty leaving and entering the Bryn Mawr campus between noon and 4 p.m.
According to Roland Park Country School director of marketing and communication Nancy Mugele, fans could park there "if they could find a spot."
Mugele added that "all our students and employees will be on campus because school is in session. Carpool at RPCS begins at 3 p.m."
