Even lightning, heavy rain and the rest of the tournament field couldn't stop a group of Catonsville and Arbutus-based players from dominating the Catonsville Tuesday Men's League softball tournament for the third year in a row this summer.
Kelsey's Pub, also sponsored by G.L. Shack's Grill, won the title game by beating the Vulcan Blazers, 15-7, despite having to deal with storms blowing through the area.
In four victories in the tournament, coach Nolan Connor had 11 hits, Jesse Trout, Steve Jacobs, Robby Wheeler had nine each and Michael Jacobs added eight for the winners.
The closest tourney contest was an 8-3 verdict over Adventure Web that earned Kelsey's the top spot in the winner's bracket after opening with victories over the Hard Hitters, 15-5, and the Blazers, 19-4.
The championship wins were the 14th straight for a club that finished the season with a 31-1 record.
Brian Bent, Justin Drenner, Nick Popp, Mike Dreschler and Eric Dreschler were robust offensive contributors all season.
Eric (SS) and Mike (3B) were also stellar all season on the left side of the infield, making life easier for pitchers Mike Armstrong and J.R. Partin.
Armstrong helped the cause with some fancy glove work, making a clutch diving catch in the championship game to choke off a Vulcans' rally.
Opposing hitters had difficulty finding gaps against an outfield that included Teddy Dymicki, Jacobs, Wheeler, Bent and Connor.
Most of the group has played under the names Kelsey's Pub, Those Guys and G.L. Shack's the past three seasons, with the same positive results.
"We come to play and we win," said third-year coach Connor, whose squads are 84-9 over his three seasons with two regular-season titles and three tournament crowns.
"This is by far the best team I have ever played for," Drenner said.
It was the same statement echoed by Connor last year.
"Each year we seem to get better and better and 2012 was a great season," Connor said.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
