Poor shooting and an airtight Calvert Hall defense combined to make Loch Raven coach Doug Able's return to his alma mater a miserable experience Thursday night in the school's Alumni Memorial Gymnasium in Towson.
The Raiders (3-3) missed their first seven shots and never did get untracked offensively against the Cardinals (6-5), whose full-court press forced 14 turnovers in the early going of a 75-23 romp.
Calvert Hall's run-and-gun tactics were fueled by a press that befuddled Loch Raven, which was coming off an emotional 56-52 triumph over Towson High the previous night.
"I think we did show signs of fatigue in the third quarter when the game got out of hand," said Able, who played hoops at Boston College before embarking on a professional career in Finland and Sweden. "But you have to play against top-notch competition to get better."
Calvert Hall wasn't exactly a ball of fire early, either, considering its lead near the end of the first quarter was only, 5-4, after Loch Raven's Devon Burnett's jumper from the top of the key.
However, when the running game cranked it up in the second period, the Cardinals bolted to a 30-11 halftime advantage.
Senior Justin Beck's jumper from the corner started a 11-0 run late in the first quarter that lasted until midway through the second period.
Junior Wesley Blackwell canned a pair of free throws, senior Densely Richardson finished a couple of fastbreaks and sophomore Sean Mayberry added two free throws to help Calvert Hall pull away.
It was more of the same in the third quarter when Mayberry swished a baseline jumper and Beck produced a three-point play and a couple of more layups to bury the Raiders.
"We needed a big effort defensively tonight," Calvert Hall coach John Bakersfield said, knowing the every Cardinal scored in the contest. "And we needed some contributions from our bench — and we got it."
Senior guard Julian Davis keyed the Cardinal running attack.
"Julian gave us great energy," the coach said. "He's what makes us go."
