This time, Calvert Hall's volleyball team got off to a better start than in its two regular season meetings with Loyola Blakefield.
But the ending looked all too familiar: Another Dons' victory.
Loyola Blakefield lost the first game before rallying past the Cardinals, 21-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-22 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship at Boys' Latin Saturday night.
It was the Dons' third straight league title. They have won 40 straight matches dating back to the 2010 season.
"I guess we are doing something right," Loyola coach Tim Baier said. "We are just not lucky."
Loyola (17-0 overall, 8-0 league) rode the performances of Bennett Bradley (25 kills), Jake Cohen (14 kills) and Brady Harvey (12 kills) to the victory.
Baier was especially impressed with the effort of Bradley, a senior outside hitter.
"I think his 25 kills were a season high," the coach said. "He played as good as he ever played. He was pretty pumped up. This is his last high school volleyball game."
Russell Coulter (20 kills, 18 digs) and Chris Mafale (9 kills, 3 blocks) led Calvert Hall (14-4, 5-3).
Gordon Wagner served three straight points late to help the Cardinal take the first set.
But Loyola looked awfully good in the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in its most lopsided win of the match.
The Dons started fast again, leading 17-9, in the third set en route to taking it.
Calvert Hall couldn't stop the Dons' momentum in the fourth set, either.
"They got on a roll in the second game and just didn't look back," Cardinals coach Anthony Cammarata said. "They put a beating on us."
In the MIAA B Conference championship game, St. Paul's dropped the first two games before rallying past Boys' Latin, 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-15.
Brendon Connolly (12 kills, 3 blocks, 10-for-11 serving), Daniel Wilson ( 6 blocks) and Jack Hearns (16 digs) powered the Crusaders.
David Santangelo (14 kills, 4 blocks), Luke Klutz (12 kills, 6 blocks), Ben Levin (45 assists), Jack Parriott (15 digs) and Bradley Schwartz (9 digs) led Boys' Latin.
