As we come to the close of another challenging year on the economic front for many, local nonprofit groups throughout the area are struggling to make ends meet and address growing needs in the community.

These groups and the people they serve need our help more than ever.

Below is a listing of local helping organizations seeking donations of either money or items, or both. In this season of giving and Thanksgiving, please share your blessings, by giving to those less fortunate.

Anderson-Snyder Memorial Fund provides Military families and funds two scholarships to Hereford High School students in memory of Norman Anderson and Joshua Snyder. Both servicemen were members of Hereford High School's Class of 2002, who died in Iraq in 2005. http://www.anderson-snyder.info

Wish List: Monetary donations.

Baltimore North Cluster Food Bank at Pine Grove United Methodist Church provides: Food and emergency money to needy area families.

Wish List: Non-perishable food may be dropped off at food bank Mondays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to noon, or Wednesdays, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monetary donations sent to P.O. Box 211, Monkton MD 21111.

Caring for Kids of Kenya provides schooling for orphans and abused children in Kenya, as well as meals, clothing, shelter and medical care. http://www.caringforkidsofkenya.org

For Our Troops(for service members with a connection to Hereford High School) provides gift packages to armed forces personnel with a connection to Hereford High School who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wish List: Make checks payable to Hereford High School and send to address above. Put "For Our Troops" in memo line.

Greater Jacksonville Optimist Club provides community service and encourages young people to excel. Meetings are first Wednesday of each month. http://www.jacksonvilleoptimists.org.

Hereford Food Bank at Hereford United Methodist Church provides food and emergency money to needy families.

Wish List: Donations of non-perishable food. Food may be dropped off at food bank Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-3 p.m. and Saturdays, 9-11 a.m. Monetary donations sent to: P.O. Box 400, Monkton, MD 21111. Donation basket is located at Graul's Market in Hereford.

Hereford Optimist Club provides community service and encourages young people to excel. Meetings are third Tuesday of each month. http://www.herefordoptimistclub.org.

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland provides two meals a day during the week to individuals who are homebound. http://www.mealsonwheelsmd.org.

My Neighbors Foundation provides school supplies and pays for student activities for those attending schools in the Hereford Zone.
