Wrestling up one weight class at 160 pounds, Hereford senior Charlie Stafford knew he needed to do something special to build on ranked Hereford’s early 12-3 lead at Perry Hall on Thursday night.
So when Perry Hall’s Jerry Williams (12-3) pulled off a reversal 16 seconds into the second period and closed his deficit to 5-4, Stafford went to work.
He nailed a reversal with 1:28 left in the period and took him to his back for a pin that gave the Bulls an 18-3 lead.
Sophomore teammate Billy Hess (170), junior Joe Miller (182) followed with pins and junior Brock Turnbaugh (195, 15-2) added a 6-2 decision over Jason Foltz (16-5) and the Bulls (15-2) had an insurmountable 33-3 lead on their way to a 45-27 victory.
“I had to do my job and get the team going,” Stafford said.
The only thing that short-circuited the Bulls gauntlet of middleweight and heavyweight victories was Perry Hall senior Matt Green’s pin of Mike Swiger with 30 seconds left in the third period at 220 pounds.
Green, a defending state, regional and county champion, improved to 21-0 this season and 32-0 over the past two campaigns.
Green, who defeated Swiger in the county and regional finals last year, bumped his career mark to 159-14.
It was Swiger’s only loss this season after 16 straight triumphs, but Hereford coach Ron Causey wasn’t shattered by the effort in which Green trailed 9-1 before the pin.
“It didn’t work out very well at the very end, but he was wrestling him very tough all match,” Causey said.
“Last year, he didn’t last very long and this year he almost lasted until the end. I’m real proud of his effort, but he’ll have to get better.”
Causey was happy to get the feature matchup in a dual meet.
“I think the outcome of the match was pretty much settled, so lets make them both better,” Causey said.
Hereford enjoyed earned pins from Kevin Wheeler (132) and unbeaten Patrick Anderson (285, 17-0), decisions from Alex Kubala (138), Dylan Gray (152) and a forfeit win from undefeated junior Anthony Genco (120, 17-0).
In addition to Green, Perry Hall earned pins from DJ Grindle (126, 19-1), Trey Settle (113, 15-6) and freshman Brent Newcomer (106).
Perry Hall’s Jacob Thomas (145) added a 6-4 decision over Brian Wensel for the Gators’ first points of the night.
