A brave Baltimore County boy loses his fight

Ever since I did a story on Riley Davis’ bone marrow transplant in September 2009, I looked forward to finally meeting him in person. I wanted to be there when he went back to Jacksonville Elementary School. He was in the middle of fourth grade...

Hereford Zone's Holiday Spirit

Here’s another example of why I love the Hereford Zone. Last month, I did a story on Robert Zerance’s sky diving adventure. Everybody who shops at Graul’s in Hereford knows Robert. He accompanies shoppers to their cars, helps them...

A Curious Coincidence

A Curious Coincidence

I don’t have an art history background, so I hadn’t heard the name Alexander Calder before. Then, in the course of one week, the famous artist/sculptor’s name came up in connection with two completely different stories I was...

Already Weary of Watering

Summer is only a week old and I’m already sick of watering my flowers. I have this vague memory of something called a rainy day and I sort of recall waking up in the middle of the night to the gentle tap, tap, tap of raindrops on my roof.

About Pat van den Beemt

Pat van den Beemt Pat van den Beemt started covering North County in October 1986 for another publication. At the time, she had just gone back to school to get a bachelor's degree, having earned a junior college degree in 1969. She had an interest in writing, but had no experience. She figured she was the only applicant because she got the job anyway, and a camera, to boot, so she could take her own photos. We think someone else recognized a promising reporter when they saw one. After she graduated from the College of Notre Dame summa cum laude -- as Pat puts it, "It's amazing how hard you work when you're an adult and you're paying for it" -- she went to work for Patuxent, eventually becoming THE reporter for the North County News. She lives in "beautiful downtown Monkton" by the Bike & Hike trail with her husband, Eric, and yellow Lab, "Ollie," with whom she hikes Gunpowder Falls State Park. Pat also volunteers at the Hereford Library.
