The new traffic pattern for motorists using the Baltimore Beltway exit to Wilkens Avenue took effect today.
Exit 12C on Interstate 695 is now closed and all traffic to exit onto Wilkens Avenue must now use exit 12B.
A temporary traffic signal has been installed so motorists can go east or west on Wilkens Avenue.
What had been one lane coming off exit 12B has been widened to two lanes, according to Dave Buck, a spokesman for the Maryland State Highway Administration.
"Now, if you don't catch it (exiting to Wilkens Avenue via exit 12B), you'll have to go up to Frederick Road (exit 13) and turn around, for example," Buck said.
Drivers will have to be aware of the change, because the only exit to Wilkens Avenue is the first one they see, he said.
"There's a longer learning curve when the ramp that's been closed is after the ramp that has to be used," he said.
The traffic pattern is projected to remain until fall 2012, according to a release from SHA.
Construction crews closed the ramp at exit 12C for Wilkens Avenue Tuesday evening and the new traffic pattern in effect went into effect Wednesday morning.
The construction comes as the SHA moves forward with its $13 million-project to replace the I-695 bridge that spans Wilkens Avenue, the release stated.
