County officials and members of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce were set to kick off the county's Restaurant Week — actually a 10-day celebration of eateries designed to encourage residents and visitors to dine out.
Baltimore County Restaurant Week runs Jan. 12-21. During that period, 36 participating restaurants across the county will feature special menus at a discounted, fixed price, offering one- to three-course lunch and dinner specials incorporating the number 12 — for 2012 — in their prices.
The special, depending on whether they are lunch or dinner combinations, will be either $10.12, $15.12, $20.12, $25.12, $30.12 or $35.12.
County Executive Kevin Kamenetz and Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce Vice President Christine Crawford are scheduled to kick off the promotion at Liberatore's Ristorante, in Timonium, on Wednesday, Jan. 11, with an event at 10:45 a.m. The week is sponsored by the chamber, the county and the Baltimore County Office of Tourism and Promotion.
County officials note that in fiscal year 2011, Baltimore County's restaurant sales brought in $1.2 billion, ranking the second highest in Maryland, just behind Montgomery County, which led with $1.4 billion.
Kamenetz noted that, in addition to the revenue, county restaurants employ nearly 25,000 workers.
