Road closures, detours planned in Hunt Valley for Susan G. Komen race Sunday

The 2011 Komen Maryland Race for the Cure will be held Sunday, Oct. 23, beginning from the Executive Plaza parking lots, across Shawan Road from Hunt Valley Towne Centre, 11350 McCormick Road.

The race offers a 5k competitive run, a 5k recreational run, a 5k walk and a 1-mile family fun walk.

The race "village" will open at 6 a.m.

Events include a Survivors Parade of Pink at 6:40 a.m., a 7:15 a.m. warm up and the start of the competitive run at 8 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.

Registration fees vary; online registration is available at http://www.komenmd.org. Race organizers ask that people leave dogs at home. Strollers are permitted in the 1-mile family fun walk only.

Parking will be available at Hunt Valley Towne Centre, North Park Business Park, the Ashland-York roads parking lot and the Wight Avenue parking lot. In addition, parking is available with shuttle bus service from Lakefront Business Park, Sam's Club and Lowe's on Deereco Road, Timonium/Deereco

Expect road closures, detours and delays

Baltimore County Police will be on hand directing traffic, where necessary, to keep things moving as efficiently as possible.

To help motorists navigate the area, variable message signs will be placed at the various locations to aid motorists the day of the race.

Road closures are as follows:

• Shawan Road at York Road: no traffic will be permitted to travel westbound on Shawan Road after 6 a.m. At 7:30 a.m. all southbound traffic on York Road will only be allowed to go onto the Giant parking lot.

• Shawan Road at the entrance to the Hunt Valley Towne Centre (east entrance, across from Verizon): no traffic will be permitted to exit the Towne Centre parking lot after 6 a.m.

• Shawan Road at main entrance to Hunt Valley Towne Centre (near light rail): no traffic will be permitted to exit the Towne Centre parking lot after 6 a.m. Once the end of the race is on Shilling Road, eastbound Shawan Road will be opened.

• Shawan Road at McCormick Road: no traffic will be permitted to enter Shawan Road from McCormick Road Pedestrians will be assisted in crossing. All eastbound traffic on Shawan Road from N/B I-83 will be directed to turn left onto McCormick Road Traffic from S/B I-83 entering eastbound Shawan Road will be directed to turn left onto International Drive.

• McCormick Road at International Circle: traffic will be directed from eastbound International Circle left on McCormick Road No traffic will be permitted to turn right onto McCormick Road toward Shawan Road

• Westbound Shawan Road ramp to northbound I-83: pedestrians will be assisted along Shawan Road

• Westbound Shawan Road at ramp from northbound I-83: pedestrians will be assisted along Shawan Road

• Westbound Shawan Road at ramp to southbound I-83: pedestrians will be assisted along Shawan Road

• Eastbound Shawan Road at ramp to northbound I-83: pedestrians will be assisted along Shawan Road

• Eastbound Shawan Road at ramp from southbound I-83: pedestrians will be assisted along Shawan Road

• McCormick Road at Shilling Circle: at 6 a.m. no vehicles will be permitted to travel N/B on McCormick Road At 7:30 a.m. no vehicles will be permitted on Shilling Road and McCormick Road All vehicles coming out of Shilling Circle will be directed to go southbound on McCormick Road

• Eastbound Shawan Road ramp from northbound I-83: pedestrians will be assisted along Shawan Road

• York Road at Shilling Road will close at 7:30 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel northbound on York Road

• York Road at Ashland Road will close at 7:45 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel on northbound York Road The northbound York Road slow lane from Ashland to Shawan will be coned off. This lane will be used to allow traffic to travel N/B after race participants pass.

• Shilling Circle exit to the rear of Burger King (access road) will close at 7:45 a.m.

• Shilling Road at Pepper Road will close at 6 a.m. Pepper Road will be closed at Shilling Road No vehicles will be permitted to enter Shilling Road from Pepper Road

• McCormick Road at Shilling Circle at the light rail tracks will close at 6 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel northbound on McCormick Road All vehicles coming out of Shilling Circle will be directed to go southbound on McCormick Road

• McCormick at Wight Avenue will close at 6 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel N/B on McCormick Road All vehicles coming out of Wight Avenue will be directed to go southbound on McCormick Road

• Beaver Dam Road at McCormick Road will close at 7 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel northbound on McCormick Road All vehicles will be directed to Beaver Dam Road toward Gilroy Road All vehicles coming from eastbound Beaver Dam Road will be directed right onto Beaver Dam Road toward Warren Road

• Beaver Dam Road at Gilroy Road will close at 6 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel northbound on Gilroy Road

• Beaver Dam Road at Ivy Hill Road will close at 7:30 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel on Beaver Dam Road east of Ivy Hill Road with the exception of the following: Hunt Valley Church, Louis Edward Court, Ivy Hill Court, and addresses between 13030 and 13109 Beaver Dam Road.

• Beaver Dam Road at Cockeysville Road will close at 7:30 a.m. No vehicles will be permitted to travel N/B on Beaver Dam Road All vehicles will be directed onto Cockeysville Road.

There will be shuttle buses transporting people from the Lakefront business area, Sam's Club, Lowe's and Timonium light Rail Park and Ride.

The buses will pick up people and transport them northbound on Beaver Dam Road to Wight Avenue and then make a right onto York Road and complete the loop. There will be a designated travel lane on McCormick Road from Beaver Dam Road to Wight Ave. for the shuttle buses after the roads have been closed for the race.

The MTA will be operating a special schedule starting as early as 5 a.m. to accommodate the public on race day. For more information visit http://www.mtamaryland.com and follow the directions for the Light Rail lines.

Please note: Due to the Phoenix Road bridge restrictions, police are suggesting the following detour: for the south-to-north movement along the York Road area is to enter northbound I-83 at W. Padonia Road to Belfast Road (exit 24) and stay eastbound on Belfast Road to York Road.

Or, use northbound York Road to right (east) onto Ashland Road Ashland Road becomes Paper Mill Road about .75 mile east of York Road Follow Paper Mill Road east to Phoenix Road Turn left (northbound) onto Phoenix Road and bear right onto Carroll Road prior to the Phoenix Road bridge. Continue north on Carroll Road and turn left (west) onto Sparks Road Follow Sparks Road to York Road.

Police anticipate that most, if not all, roads will be open to traffic by 11 a.m. However, expect heavier traffic flow in the area for an hour or two later.

Police strongly suggest drivers avoid the area altogether between 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. because of heavy traffic and road closures.
