Join the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce Sunday,. Sept. 11, for our 38th annual Catonsville Arts & Crafts Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Frederick Road between Bloomsbury and Melvin avenues.

This annual festival is one of Catonsville's premier events.

With this year's festival falling on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the day has a special significance. The chamber will acknowledge the anniversary with a remembrance ceremony at noon at the center stage on Egges Lane.

This year's menu includes

• Crab cakes and seafood from Catonsville Gourmet.

How health-care reform will affect small business

While the health-care reform law, all 2,400-plus pages of it, will take eight years to be fully implemented, some self-employed people and small employers felt the impact almost immediately.

Others won't notice changes for a few years.

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the chamber's annual joint evening meeting with the Arbutus Business and Professional Association will be devoted to health-care reform and its effect on small business.

Therese Goldsmith, Maryland's insurance commissioner, will be the guest speaker for this event, which will be held at the Jenkins Senior Living Community, 3320 Benson Ave.

She will address the state's role in setting up the Small Business Health Options Programs, or "SHOP Exchanges," where small businesses will be able to pool resources to buy insurance.

"Small businesses" are defined as those with no more than 100 employees, though states have the option of limiting pools to companies with 50 or fewer employees through 2016; companies that grow beyond the size limit will be grandfathered in.

It is important for small business owners to be educated on the impact this reform will have on their bottom line, so this meeting should not be missed.

The featured member drawing, 50/50 raffle and door prizes will add to the evening's festivities.

Cost is $20 pre-paid, $25 at door, $35 non-members.
