SHA closing Beltway ramp to Frederick Road for a month

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) closed the ramp from I-695 South (Beltway outer loop) to Route 144 (Frederick Road) on Sept. 9.

The temporary ramp closure is expected to last approximately one month and is part of SHA's $16.5 million project to replace the Frederick Road bridge over the Baltimore Beltway and improve safety and traffic operations at the interchange.

The new bridge will be slightly taller, to accommodate truck traffic, and that requires the ramp to be raised slightly.

The ramp will re-open in mid- October, weather permitting.

During the next month, crews are scheduled to rebuild the end of the ramp connection to Frederick Road, constructing a transition area from the new bridge to the roadway and building new curbs, gutters and sidewalks along the future westbound lanes of Frederick Road in the interchange area.

For the next month, motorists traveling from the outer loop of I-695 to Route 144 at exit 13 will be directed to the following detour:

• I-695 south to exit 12, Route 372 (Wilkens Avenue),

• right onto Wilkens Avenue east,

• left onto Kenwood Avenue

• left onto I-695 North (Beltway inner loop) back to exit 13, Route 144.

For more information about the project, contact the SHA project field office in Catonsville at 410-455-0657, the SHA District 4 Office-Construction Section at 410-229-2420, toll-free at 1-866-998-0367 or by email: shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us.

Motorists should note that Maryland SafeZones automated speed enforcement cameras are deployed along I-695 at exits 12 and 13.

Drivers photographed exceeding the posted speed limit of 55 mph by more than 12 mph through the work zone will be fined $40.
