Baltimore County art teachers to be honored Oct. 19

Seven art teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels will be honored by the Baltimore County Public Schools Visual Arts Office Oct. 19 during the 2012 Maryland Art Education Association Conference at James H. Blake High School in Silver Spring.

The school system's district-wide awards will recognize "new" teachers, who are within their first two years of teaching in the district, "career" teachers, who have taught in the school system for 10 years or more, and one retired educator.

The new teachers to be honored are:

Katie Gutwald Heuston of Mars Estates and Carney elementary schools,

Michelle Dress of Ridgely Middle School

Amber Carky of Hereford High School.

The career teachers honored are:

Joanne Perlin of Randallstown Elementary School,

Kathy Chenowith of Loch Raven Technical Academy,

Brandon Nicklas of Lansdowne High School.

Sandy Cryder, who last taught at New Town High, will be honored as retired teacher of the year.

During next week's conference, eight county art educators, including three who had been selected as 2011 statewide art teachers of the year, will present workshops.

Laura Pattaca-Kerr of Oakleigh Elementary School, the 2011 Maryland Elementary Art Teacher of the Year, Cecilia Terlizzi of Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, the 2011 Maryland Middle Level Art Teacher of the Year, and Ryan Twentey of Parkville High School, the 2011 Maryland Secondary Art Teacher of the Year, will present "spotlight sessions" to showcase the art programs in their schools and their best practices.

The following county visual arts teachers will also make presentations at the conference:

Vernon Fains, Pine Grove Middle School — "Who Am I? Personal Identity in Sculpture."

Sherri Fisher, Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts — "Building Community Beyond the School Walls" and "DEMO: Examining and Deconstructing the Act and Art of Teaching in the Visual Art Classroom."

Amanda Foti, Loch Raven Technical Academy – "Making Real World Connections: Career Exploration in the Visual Arts."

Kathryn Gutwald Heuston, Mars Estates and Carney elementary schools – "Adaptations and Accessibility: Teaching Art to Students with Special Needs."

Grace Hulse, Orems Elementary School – "Exploring Fiber Arts in Elementary Art: Fabric Collages Using No-Sew Techniques."
