What started as a display of vintage cars to give a nostalgic feel to Hereford High School's 50th anniversary party in 2004 has turned into an annual car show that draws more than 250 cars, street rods, trucks, motorcycles and even fire engines.

The 8th annual Hereford Zone Car Show will be held June 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Executive Plaza business park in Hunt Valley.

"This is a fun day for the whole family," said Fred Ritzmann, one of the show's organizers. "People love walking up and down the rows of cars, but the real reason for this is to raise money for scholarship fund."

The show is hosted by the Sparks-Hereford Alumni Association and proceeds benefit the Leib McDonald Memorial Technical School Scholarship. McDonald was a Sparks High School graduate who taught vocational agriculture at both Sparks and Hereford high schools and eventually became principal at Hereford High.

The scholarship is awarded to a graduating Hereford High School student who is continuing his or her education at a vocation or technical school or pursuing a career in agriculture.

Ritzmann said two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year, thanks to the popularity of the annual car show.

The show was held in front of Hereford High School until an increased number of cars forced organizers to move it to Hunt Valley in 2008.

The show is now at the intersection of Shawan and McCormick roads in Hunt Valley.

There is no admission charge. Registration is $10 per vehicle. Judging starts at 1 p.m. and awards are given out at 4:30. A total of 25 trophies will be awarded. Radio station 100.7 The Bay is joining car enthusiasts again this year. The station will have live music, activities and a BBQ Bash where amateurs will cook their favorite barbecue dishes for judging and prizes. Rain date is June 17.
