The Baltimore Highlands Community Association met Monday, Jan. 21, at Christ United Methodist Church for the first time in the new year. Attendance was sparse, due to the Martin Luther King holiday and the presidential gala.
First District Baltimore County Councilman Tom Quirk appeared before the group and talked about construction projects slated to begin in our neighborhood this year. He expressed pride in recently having been elected chairman of the council.
Others present included Pastor Richard Keller, Rich Parker, Dyane Bergman, Dennis Condon, John and Judy Edmondson, Rachael Dollies and Kris Bury.
The association's next meeting is Feb. 18. Call me for more information.
The English Consul Volunteer Fire Department, 2827 Michigan Ave., will host a dinner and bingo event Friday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. The $20 cost covers a menu of meatloaf, potatoes, carrots, rolls, dessert and a beverage.
A sweetheart dance, featuring an Elvis impersonator, will be held Feb. 15, from 7 p.m. to midnight. The $25 fee includes a meal with beer and set-ups.

Family Fun Night begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Christ United Methodist, 2833 Florida Ave. Lauren Brumbaugh and Mikie Johnson will serve a light meal.
Christ United Methodist members are encouraged to donate a favorite can of soup to share with others on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3, at noon. Then go home and cheer on The Ravens.
Pastor Keller invites couples to renew their marriage vows during a short 9 a.m. service Feb. 10, as a preview to Valentine's Day. On Shrove Tuesday, Feb. 12, the annual pancake dinner will be prepared at 6 p.m. An Ash Wednesday service will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.
The youth group at Lansdowne United Methodist Church, 114 Lavern Ave., will sell submarine sandwiches for $5 to enjoy during the Super Bowl. Choose vegetable, chicken noodle or ham and bean soup for $1.50 per pint or $3.50 per quart. Place orders with Laurie Slack at 443-610-4456 to be picked up Sunday, Feb. 3.
August Raveio American Legion Post 195, located at 2603 Virginia Ave., will sponsor a sweetheart dinner dance Feb. 10, 2 to 6 p.m., to benefit the junior auxiliary program. For $12, feast on baked chicken or fish, mashed potatoes with gravy, vegetable medley, rolls and assorted desserts. Soft music, a beautifully decorated dining environment and a take-home souvenir are also featured.
