Baltimore Highlands: Senior center offers warm welcome to winter party

New Year's DayAmerican Legion

The Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands Senior Center will host a winter party Thursday, Dec. 20, from noon to 2 p.m. at the center, 424 Third Ave.

Menu includes pineapple juice, barbecue spare ribs, baked beans, cole slaw, corn bread, mixed fruit cup and coffee or cold drinks. Tickets $5.

The English Consul Volunteer Fire Department reminds the community that Santa rides will be going through neighborhoods beginning at dusk.

Santa's helpers will be collecting donations to help the department's efforts in keeping the community safe. Donations can also be dropped off at the station, 2827 Michigan Ave.

Residents are urged to talk to their children about fire safety and check batteries in smoke detectors.

Anyone wishing to join the department should contact Chief Robert Bury, 410-887-0972.

Christ United Methodist Church will hold a Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. for families with children and an 11 p.m. candlelight service Dec. 24 at the church, 2833 Florida Ave.

The church, which has handed out more than 115 gift certificates to children and more than 50foodbaskets to families during the holidays, encourages members of the community to think of the less fortunate during the final weeks of 2012 with prayers and actions.

You are asked to donate canned meats, peanut butter, spaghetti and sauce, soups and pasta to Southwest Emergency Services. Drop off items at the church on Sundays or Wednesdays at the church office, 10 a.m. to noon. SWES also needs towels for its homeless clients.

August Raveio American Legion Post 195 will host a New Year's Eve party at the post, 2603 Virginia Ave,. Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Dinner served 8-9 p.m. that includes ham steak, scalloped potatoes, peas and carrots, rolls and butter, dessert.

Music by Mario Monaldi and Sons starts at 9 p.m. Midnight toast with champagne. Coffee, cheese and crackers, chips and pretzels available. Cost is $35.
