Providence Valley 9/11 Memorial
COMMITMENT OF STEEL Providence Volunteer Fire Company President Philip Darr addresses the crowd during Sunday's dedication of the "Walk of Memory" garden at the station, featuring a beam that the station secured from the World Trade Center. Hundreds of people turned out for the Sept. 11 ceremony to dedicate the beam memorial. The section of steel weighs 510 pounds, and is part of the garden walkway, which also includes bricks engraved as part of a station fundraising effort. A bronze plaque at the site notes, "This piece of steel is from the World Trade Center in New York and is a memorial dedicated to the 343 brave firefighters who gave their lives on September 11, 2001. ... We will never forget." "This is a tangible remembrance of the dedication of fellow firefighters, who so selflessly ran into the burning building as others made their way to safety," said Garry Zour, the fire company's administrative vice president. "It will ... remind everyone of the importance of what we do every day, day in and day out."
