Critic's picks: Theater

The actor George Hamilton is known for his perpetually bronzed skin, breezy charisma, impeccable tailoring and fondness for applause. So he might seem a shoo-in to portray Albin, the more flamboyant of the two gay men who make up the center of "La Cage aux Folles." Guess again. When the national tour of "La Cage" comes to the Hippodrome in November, the Tanned One will take the stage as Georges, the relatively buttoned-down owner of the down-on-its-spike-heels St. Tropez nightclub. Actor Christopher Sieber, a two-time Tony nominee, will portray the cross-dressing Albin, a.k.a. "Zaza." The show deals with the fall-out after Georges' son (the product of a youthful liaison) becomes engaged to a woman with homophobic parents. The 2010 production picked up three Tony Awards, including best revival of a musical, charming audiences with such immortal lyrics as: "So when it's cold and when it's bleak / I simply rouge the other cheek, / for I can face another day / in satin slipper lingerie." -- Mary Carole McCauley La Cage Aux Folles runs from Nov. 1-6 at the Hippodrome Theatre, 12 N. Eutaw St. Tickets cost $22.75-$77.25. Call 410-547-7328 or go to france-merrickpac.com. Handout
