After making her last musical at RKO with partner Fred Astaire -- "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" -- Rogers got all serious as an actress. She even changed her brassy blond hair to dark brown. It worked: She won the lead actress Oscar for this 1940 melodrama adapted by Dalton Trumbo from Christopher Morley's novel. Rogers plays the title role, a young woman from the wrong side of the tracks who is torn between the sincere young doctor she's been dating and Wyn, the wealthy hunk whom she's adored for years. When she chooses wealth, Wyn's parents try an extreme makeover on her, but Kitty refuses. An annulment follows, and so does the news that Kitty is pregnant -- and Wyn has already moved on and is engaged to a socialite. "Kitty Foyle" also earned four other Oscar nominations, including best film, director and screenplay.
