Hilary Swank

“Boys Don’t Cry”

A former regular on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Swank earned her best actress Oscar for her heartbreaking turn in this 1999 film based on the true story of Teena Brandon, a young woman from Lincoln, Neb., who decides she’d be happier as a boy. Cutting her hair, dressing as a boy — including sticking a sock inside the front of her pants — she renames herself Brandon Teena. Brandon moves to a little town in the state called Falls City, where she is immediately attracted to Lana (Chloe Sevigny). Peter Sarsgaard and Brendan Sexton III play the town’s local studs who react violently when the truth is learned about Brandon.
