"The Great Lie"
Get out your hankies for this handsome 1941 "woman's film" starring Mary Astor in her Oscar-winning role as supporting actress. Astor pulls out all the stops as Sandra, a selfish concert pianist who marries a handsome aviator named Pete (George Brent) only to learn after the hasty nuptials that the marriage isn't legal because Sandra's divorce from an earlier marriage wasn't finalized. And Pete realizes that he really loves his longtime sweetheart Maggie (Bette Davis) and marries her. Meanwhile, Sandra learns that she is pregnant with Pete's baby and schemes to use the unborn child as leverage to get Pete back. When Pete goes missing on a flight over the Brazilian jungle, Maggie convinces Sandra to allow her to raise the child as her own. But the melodrama really hits the fan when Pete returns from his flight and learns of his son.
