'Hulk' (2003)

Ambitious, occasionally stunning but ultimately muddled, Ang Lee's "Hulk" at times felt like the most explosion- and mayhem-filled art film ever made. A 2008 reworking of the story was somewhat better received but still didn't quite hit the sweet spot fans were hoping for. Nonetheless, the character (this time played by Mark Ruffalo, following Eric Bana and Edward Norton) will be a key part of "The Avengers" in 2012.
