The historic Senator Theatre is the only movie theater in Baltimore that can do justice to visually sprawling films. The Senator boasts Dolby Digital sound checked by none other than Lucasfilm, more than 800 seats, and a gargantuan screen. This classic cinema offers an alternative to both the sterility of the multiplexes and the lackluster sound and screens of the city's art house cinemas.

With its front sidewalk decorated with concrete blocks detailing local cinematic accomplishments -- signatures of Edward Norton and John Waters lie alongside tributes to Baltimore-filmed movies like "The Accidental Tourist" and "Runaway Bride" -- and its lobby decked out with black and white photos chronicling the theater's life since its 1939 construction, the Senator stands as Baltimore's last link to the days of the grandiose, old movie houses. This is the place where "Star Wars" was re-released and foolish fans (myself included) stood in the snow for eight hours to get a seat. It's the place where "Titanic" became immensely more disturbing with the huge screen in front and the cries of drowning Edwardians echoing all around you in surround sound.

As an architectural relic that shows films in all of their giant glory, the theater holds a special place among Baltimore's living landmarks.--Jason Leahey
