Ensconced in an 1885 building erected as a Baltimore Gas & Electric Company valve house, Housewerks opened in February 2005 to serve customers in search of architectural antiques and other decorative gems. The building -- a lovingly-restored marvel of the Queen Anne period -- is worth a brief visit. Housewerks gutted it after co-owner Ben Riddleberger discovered it and its availability during a business trip through town in 2004. "The basement was a mess, but the façade was amazing," says Riddleberger. After dealing with water and termite damage in the basement and cleaning off the exterior, the shop opened its doors to cater to rowhouse rehabbers and others who are looking to retrofit their homes. Most customers come from Bolton Hill, Federal Hill, Roland Park and Washington, D.C., Riddleberger says, to take a gander at fireplace mantels, sconces, wrought iron and religious stained glass pieces, among other touches. He and his co-workers travel through the mid-Atlantic and Midwest in search of the authentic touches -- manna to homesteaders and home-improvement junkies.--Michael Anft
