Joe Sugarman has been promoted from senior editor to editor-in-chief at Baltimore's Style magazine. He succeeds Brian Lawrence who was fired in September after 10 years in that job.
"Yes, the rumors are true," Sugarman wrote in an email response seeking confirmation of his appointment. "The November food issue will be my first as editor-in-chief at Style. That issue comes out early next week, with a great cover photo of Hilary Phelps looking like she just stepped out of the set of 'Mad Men.'"
Sugarman added that he and his team will "likely roll out some changes to the magazine by the second quarter of 2013, including a redesign by the new creative director, Kim Van Dyke."
Sugarman is a native of Philadelphia who came to Baltimore in 1991 and has been working in area media since. He was editor-in-chief of Chesapeake Life magazine and senior editor at Mid-Atlantic Country magazine. He is also the author of "City Smart: Baltimore," a guidebook to the city published by Avalon in 2000.
Style was owned by Alter Communications until the company was sold along with the Baltimore Jewish Times in April at auction to a firm that owns the Washington Jewish Times. At its website, Clipper City Media identifies itself as the "umbrella brand of the Baltimore Jewish Times, Style Magazine and all the publications, products and services of the former Alter Communications. When Alter was sold to the WJW Group in April 2012, Clipper City Media was launched."
