James Roday and Dule Hill star in USA's "Psych;" the show's second season premieres Friday, July 13 at 10 p.m./9c. (USA Network/Matthias Clamer) |
"Psych" is back for a second season of fake psychic Shawn (James Roday) and his wingman Gus (Dule Hill) out-solving the real crime-solvers. Using some very unconventional methods, this odd couple manages to beat the police at their own game time and time again, to hilarious effect.
Roday and Hill teased about upcoming episodes, cool guest stars and something involving Jheri curl that we really can't wait to see.
Which storylines are you two most excited about this season?
Dule Hill: The season premiere is very funny. We've got a great guest cast with Tim Curry and Gina Gershon and it's an episode that James [Roday] co-wrote. I always love the episodes he writes, so that's one of my top ones so far this year.
James Roday: I'd have to agree with DuleI'm pretty psyched about our premiere. We went pretty big with it, across the board, like bigger, better, faster "Psych" version 2.0. Getting to watch Tim Curry work was an honor and Gershon knocked it out of the park. And I got to watch Dule wear Jheri curl these are all big highlights for me. We also have an episode that takes place in the world of "Pimp My Ride," which I got a kick out of.
Any Jheri curl for you?
James: No, but I did deliver a ridiculous hairstyle of my own. It was just as big and just as ridiculous, but there was no Jheri Curl involved.
What other guest stars did you snag for this season?
James: John Amos came in and did an episode. And it's just cool to be standing next to John Amos. I don't know if you've ever stood next to John Amos, but I would recommend doing that as soon as possible. [Laughs] I don't really know how you'd go about doing thatÂ…I don't know if you have to follow himÂ…but just try to stand next to him because it's really cool. It's such a good feeling.
Dule: And Lou Diamond Phillips
James: Yeah! Lou came on, did his thing. He sort of plays ["Psych" head police detective Carlton] Lassiter, times 20. [Laughs] He's like the federal version of Lassiter.
Have you gotten any hate mail from supposed "real" psychics?
James: I have not. To be honest, after the pilot episode, I'm not sure how many psychics kept tuning in. [Laughs] I think we're doing a pretty good job of spoofing that entire line of work. I'm not sure how popular we are with the real psychics out there.
What about the now infamous "Psych-Outs" at the end of each episodehow did those start?
Dule: It started during the pilot. When we got done filming, we figured out we had a bonding place: Singing '80s and '90s songs. By the end of the shoot, we came up with the "Man in the Mirror" Psych-Out that we did. We were playing around, having a good time; it turned out to be so funny, they put it at the end of the episode. We didn't know at that time that we'd be doing Psych-Outs for the rest of the season
Will you be doing more this season?
James: I think we're gonna try to mix it up a little so it's not a song every week. We're gonna do a couple of those, but we've got a couple other things up our sleeves that we'll be trying out this year for the Psych-Outs.
Any hints?
James: There's always bloopers and things that go wrong on the set, but I think a couple of public service announcements would be funny. [Laughs] We'll see what we can throw together.
