He's coming home!

Matt Giraud, the dueling piano player from Kalamazoo made it to the top five on American Idol.

Now, he's coming home, and West Michigan is throwing him a huge party!

It's this Thursday at Arcadia Creek Festival Place in downtown Kalamazoo.

Gates open at 4:00, so bring your signs to welcome Matt home, and get a spot for the show!

There will be vendors on site, and music starts at 6:00, featuring some of Matt's friends and co-workers. Then, at 7:00, join FOX 17's Michele DeSelms and Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell for the official event, with dignitaries from across the state, and some special surprises for Matt!

Ok now for the show. We have breaking American Idol news!

The set is falling!

Ryan shows us a tower that has collapsed, explaining that it happened earlier in the day, so the contestants didn't get a full rehearsal.

We have six songs tonight: they are singing duets, along with their rock songs tonight! Wow-- Allison is really rocking it out-- nice look for her. And I'm hearing rumors of some tension between Kris and Adam.. so I'll be keeping an eye out for anything that looks weird! Ryan introduces us to Slash, this week's mentor.

I love "Sweet Child of Mine" as much as the next gal, but c'mon. Slash? Mentoring our little idol hopefuls?

Danny looks terrified. If anyone can pull it off, though, it's Adam! And he's up first.

ADAM LAMBERT: "Whole Lot of Love" He's certainly got the look, and OMG that voice! (plus the mascara on the lower lashes-- to die for) He's hot. I'm done.

RANDY: so listen, this is the adam that he loves! he's a rock star waiting to happen KARA: You're a rock god! PAULA: Whole lot of perfect! SIMON: One of his favorite performances he's ever done! How can anthing ever top that??

ALLISON IRAHETA "Cry Baby" She has that rocker voice that was just made to sing Janis Joplin!

RANDY: yo. so check it. I mean you can sing your face off, but didn't love the song. KARA: you know, Janis is the right choice, but should have chosen another song. Were you nervous tonight? (Allison says she's always nervous!) PAULA: calls her fearless, and says she did a great job SIMON: says the difference over the past 8 weeks is staggering, and loved her performance. (would have chosen the other song)

Explains why she didn't choose the other song, and Simon tells her at this point to just 'beg'.

Time for a duet! Kris and Danny sing "Renegade" -- it's average, at best. There's no voting on this performance, per se.. but comparing the two, Danny wins. (barely)

RANDY: liked the harmonies. KARA: thinks it's funny that these nice boys sang Renegade! PAULA: says it was compelling and powerful. SIMON: Danny was better than Kris.
