Battle over beef

Oprah Winfrey, shown arriving for the premiere of her new made-for-television movie "Before Women Had Wings" on Oct. 1997. At the time, she was being sued by Texas cattlemen, who charged that beef prices plummeted, costing them $10 million, because a 1996 talk show gave the impression that U.S. beef could be tainted with mad cow disease. They unsuccessfully sued Winfrey under a Texas law forbidding the disparagement of agricultural products.
