55, Director, Harford County Public Library
A year ago, Harford County Public Library Director Mary Hastler became briefly infamous for barring the wildly popular, but extremely racy, novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" from system shelves. Since then, she has worked to bring attention to initiatives guiding Harford's libraries -- with an $18 million budget and an annual circulation of 4.5 million -- into the digital future. "We've launched so many new things," she said. "This past year has been super cool." Two of the coolest are LEAP -- Learn, Explore, and Play -- aimed at fostering children's interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and new digital streaming technologies to deliver the library system's content to its patrons.
