George Washington's letter resigning his commission
The oldest statehouse in the county in continuous legislative use, Annapolis' architectural crown has housed Maryland's legislature since 1772. While it was briefly home to the U.S. Congress, George Washington, reading from this text he had carefully prepared, resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The original document is in the collection of the Maryland State Archives.
