Arts and Attractions: Annual event

Artscape Mount Royal Avenue and North Charles Street, 410-752-8632 or Since 1982, Artscape has been making the dog days of Baltimore's summers just a little bit easier to bear, not to mention considerably more festive. Billed as the nation's largest free arts festival, Artscape offers acres and acres of artists, performers, vendors and a glorious miscellany (we especially have enjoyed the Ferris wheel set up outside Penn Station). There are films, concerts, street performers, rock operas and interactive art -- all utterly free. "We're looking to throw the best party of the summer in town," said Kathy Hornig, director of festivals for the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, which has produced the annual free-for-all since 2002. "The fact that it develops and showcases our local artists, and brings everybody out to celebrate the arts, is just icing on the cake." See for yourself when Artscape 2014 plays out July 18-20. "It's such an icon for our city," said Hornig. "I don't know anyone who could imagine summer in Baltimore without three days of Artscape." -- Chris Kaltenbach
