Veterinarian and hospital owner Dr. Jonathan Kaufman credits the success of this 24-year-old practice to an exacting formula: determining what's best for the patient -- even when that's not what the owner wants to hear -- and then gently helping the pet owner understand.
"Because what the pets need isn't always what the owners' needs are. They come in with -- perhaps -- their perception of what they think they need or what they've gotten in the past," he said. "I stick with classic training. I do think diagnosing a problem is essential to treating it correctly."
But, Kaufman's care clearly extends to people as well as pets, starting with his staff. Hospital administrator Carol Linthicum says Kaufman offers his employees breakfast, lunch and dinner. On his dime. He has a salad bar in the kitchen to make sure they can eat healthfully.
The staff carries that same consideration over to patients and their owners, like bay pilot Beth Christman and her two French bulldogs, Tinkerbelle and Francine, one of whom has an unhealthy affinity for eating tennis balls.
The hospital "has always been available. They have a great staff. They have good hours," she said. "And they have great surgeons."
Take note: Many of the 10 employees have been there for more than two decades, like hospital administrator Carol Linthicum. "We're like a whole family. ... We call it the Hotel California," she said. "Once you come here, you never leave."
