The three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champ grew up in Altamonet Springs. He lead his little league team to the 1984 Little League World Series championships, where they fell 6-2 to a team from Seoul, South Korea. He went on to attend Lake Brantley High School, winning a state championship in 1990. He was also a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, and played for Georgia Tech.
